Terra Madre Gardens Takes Over Where Stone Farms Left Off

Ten years ago, David Solomon and Jessica Sanchez walked away from the corporate world for a simpler life with their children as urban farmers.

Now, at their newly renamed Terra Madre Gardens in Escondido, they hope to inspire other young families to find similar inspiration.

In March, the longtime managers of Stone Brewing Co.’s now-defunct Stone Farms took over the lease on the 19-acre property and they’re relaunching it as a family-run agro-tourism destination. Besides continuing to grow dozens of varieties of fruits and vegetables, they hope to spread awareness about farming and gardening to the community with outdoor festivals, workshops, potlucks, a farmers market and school field trips.

“We are caretakers of the earth and what we want to do is teach children and adults how they can take care of the land and contribute to the greater picture,” Solomon said of the rustic hillside farm at 9928 Protea Gardens Road.

To kick things off, the couple will host a free weekend celebration later this month. From 1 to 3 p.m. April 23, they’ll host a compost and worm castings workshop, and from 1 to 6 p.m. April 24, they’ll have a Peace on Earth Day celebration, with farm tours, children’s face-painting, a massage station and live music by Sol Remedy with refreshments for sale.
