Escondido is home to Niki’s Queen Califia’s Magical Circle, the only American sculpture garden and the last major international project created by Niki de Saint Phalle . Inspired by California’s mythic, historic and cultural roots, the garden consists of nine large-scale sculptures, a circular “snake wall” and maze entryway, sculpturally integrated bench seating, and native shrubs and trees planted within the interior plaza and along the outer perimeter. The garden bears the brilliant, unique mosaic ornamentation that is an unmistakable part of Saint Phalle’s later work.  The sculpture garden is open every second Saturday of the month from 10:00am to 2:00 pm weather permitting.  For more information on the park to to, VisitEscondido.com

Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002) is one of the most popular artists of the mid-twentieth century, both visual artist, painter, sculptor and filmmaker, perhaps best known to the public for her famous “Nanas”.  A retrospective of her work is currently at the ARKEN Museum for Moderne Kunst, Copenhagen/Ishoej, Denmark.
