ESCONDIDO — Lake Wohlford will be the last lake to open for trout fishing in the county on Saturday, and the opener figures to be a good one.
The lake will be stocked this week with 4,500 pounds of Nebraska Tailwalker trout. Overall, the lake will get 12,000 pounds of trout in the first two months of its late season.
Specials this season include discounts for seniors and military for boat rentals. Seniors may rent a boat for $20 a day on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and military get the discount rate every first and third Saturday of the month. Bass boats will be discounted at $35 after 1 p.m. every Monday through Thursday.
The lake had only been open on weekends since September, but starting Saturday it will be open every day.
Catfishing has been exceptional at the lake leading up to the winter trout season. Mike Macleod of Vista was the latest to score, landing a 28.60 catfish. The leader in the Whopper of the Month for November, though, was a 34.60-pound lunker catfish caught by Gerald Olozagusto.
Each month, Whopper Contest winners from four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. Call the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346 or check www.escondido.org/lake-wohlford
Also, if you need a fishing license, gear, bait, snacks or good breakfast, lunch or dinner, visit Smokey’s Lake Wohlford Café, “Home of the Famous Catfish Dinner.” The place has old school café atmosphere with quality entertainment throughout the year, featuring bands like New Riders Band, the Drinking Cowboy Band, Heidi and the Hurricane, Del Rio and Fastlane.
