“Five licks from Bluey and I know the wine is good. Two licks, and the cellar master partner is advising me to throw the wine out”, says Craig Justice with a chuckle. Craig is the founder of Blue-Merle Winery (a small family-owned artisan winery in Escondido, California), but Bluey, the Blue-Merle Australian Shepherd, runs the show.

Blue-Merle Winery is located atop a steep hill, 1,625 feet above sea level. The property extends as far as the eye can see. “On a clear day, I can see China from my house!” Justice exclaims.

There are over 1,000 vines in Blue-Merle’s vineyard, including varietals of Tempranillo, Grenache, Petite Sirah, Aglianico and Zinfandel. “We know every vine by name and each individual vine is cared personally for… I often find myself cutting individual weeds with hand clippers.”

When Justice was asked “Why wine?” his reply was “Bluey says it was always his dream to be a winedog instead of a sheepdog. I believe the real reason is that it was the only way he could get a date with Lassie!”

Blue-Merle wines are award-winning and are crafted by hand & paw. The Blue-Merle’s tasting room is located at the Hidden Valley Enoteca at 26312 Mesa Rock Road in Escondido, CA 92026.
